Mammography

Breast implants may make a mammography more difficult and as they can obscure the detection of breast cancer. Any type breast implant can impair the detection of breast cancer, regardless of where the implant is within the breast tissue. Implants can rupture during breast compression in a mammography. Patients must inform the mammography technologist about his or her breast implants. Patients with capsular contracture may find mammogram techniques painful. Ultrasounds, specialized mammography and MRI studies are better options for spotting breast lumps in patients with implants. However, because doctors cannot easily determine what is on an X-ray, patients with implants may undergo more X-ray radiation than women receiving normal exams. Mammographies help find cancer, which outweighs the risk of additional X-rays. Patients may wish to undergo a preoperative mammogram and another one after implantation to establish a baseline view of their breast tissue. Although the medical and scientific communities, through research and discovery, got the upper hand over many of the diseases we have encountered since the advent of advanced medicine, many diseases that are more complicated. Diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s are caused by a combination of genetic and other factors. Coupled with the fact that they tend to be chronic, they place a significant burden on not only the patient, but on the healthcare system as a whole.
